Client success story: Legionella outbreak at a healthcare facility
A healthcare facility had an outbreak of Legionella resulting in multiple illnesses, 2 deaths, and lawsuits. Legal costs and reparations totaled more than $63 million.
The facility purchased a chlorine dioxide generator; however the EPA discovered the disinfection generator was being used without their approval and ordered the facility to do ongoing external laboratory testing.
EWS liaised with the EPA and the facility to build the first private laboratory in the state of Ohio to test for chlorine dioxide and chlorites, including training facility staff. We also worked with the vendor of the chlorine dioxide generator to set proper chemical dosing.
The healthcare facility has remained in compliance and kept their patients, staff, and the community safe from Legionella risk for more than 5 years.
